Gravitec Experts Say: Petzl's FREINO Carabiner is a locking carabiner with friction spur for descenders. The spur helps increase the friction for improved control of the descent (e.g. two-person rescues). Rope is easily inserted into the spur without opening the carabiner. The Twist-Lock automatic locking sleeve is unlocked by a simple rotation. The Freino is a specialized carabiner for use on Petzl descent control devices like the I'D, the GRIGRI or the STOP, etc., when extra friction is required (all available for purchase in the Rope Access section). It connects the worker's harness to the descent device in the traditional manner while the brake side of the descent rope exhausts out of the device and trails to the left or right of the worker. When extra friction is required (to gain more control during a descent), the brake rope is rerouted into the friction spur. The extra contact creates more friction, enabling the worker to control the speed of the descent or add weight to the system. If you are 150 lbs. and you are rescuing your 280 lb. co-worker, you will appreciate the extra friction that the friction spur creates. Like Petzl's AM'D Carabiner (available for purchase in the Connectors section), the Keylock prevents nose snags and the double-locking gate meets legal requirements.
