Gravitec Experts Say: Petzl's WILLIAM BALL-LOCK Carabiner, like all carabiners, has its place. For an extra level of protection the gate has a locking feature that requires the user to press a small ball to open the gate, a feature found on many of Petzl's carabiners. This carabiner works well for belaying with a Munter hitch, harness tie-ins or other applications where a little extra security is desired. Although it provides an extra level of security, that extra level reduces this carabiner's user-friendliness. The ball sits in a little depression (to prevent it from being inadvertently opened) that sometimes makes it difficult to press, particularly with a gloved hand. If you are opening and closing your carabiner frequently, this isn't the carabiner for you. It works best when left in one place for the duration of an application. Its large size and opening allow anchoring of several ropes and slings and its wide pear shape facilitates belaying with a Munter hitch.
