Bainbridge Island, Wash. - December 10, 2007 - It's been a week since snow and torrential rains caused flooding, power outages, mudslides and downed trees on Bainbridge Island, Wash., where Gravitec Systems, Inc., is located.
While some Island businesses experienced power outages that forced them to close their doors to customers, Gravitec only experienced the occasional flickering of lights. Last week's Fall Protection Trainer course was held at the Gravitec Training Institute without interruption, and business at Gravitec has carried on as usual since the inclement weather.
The National Weather Service's station at the Bremerton National Airport, southwest of Bainbridge Island, reported 12.57 inches of rainfall to the area on Dec. 3 and 4, according to the Kitsap Sun, the area's largest newspaper. Snowstorms in the days preceding the rains exacerbated the flooding.
No Gravitec employees were flood victims. At worst, they experienced temporary power outages at their homes and longer commutes caused by closed roads, washed-out bridges and blackened traffic signals in Kitsap County, where Bainbridge Island is located. Gravitec's facilities did not sustain any damage as a result of the flooding.
At other locations on the Island, mudslides and downed trees blocked roads, and some residents experienced flooding. In the days that followed the storms, local schools were closed and 1,797 Puget Sound Energy customers reported power outages, according to the Kitsap Sun.
Since the flooding, President Bush has declared Washington State's flooding a major disaster. Kitsap County will soon receive aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help mop up the region.
